Southern Comfort

I went on a day trip down to Galle, which is on the south coast. The beaches in Galle are so beautiful, and the scenery was pretty spectacular. I spent the day in the Dutch Fort, which is made up of several streets and alleyways full of shops, restaurants, hotels and museums. Everything looks vintage and picturesque, and I feel like I’m on a holiday strolling around the streets.

After lunch at the Pedlar’s Inn Cafe, I walked through the maritime museum and over to the old church. As I was walking, I heard someone playing some music, and as I looked over, the man lifted a massive python from out of nowhere! I was so shocked and slightly freaked out. It’s meant to be a tourist attraction apparently, so beware, in case you’re like me and would rather not go near one. And there are a few more dotted around the Fort – one who even has a monkey. I continued my stroll along the rampart. From there you can see the sea and the coastline. The water is so blue and gorgeous, and the sea breeze whips through your hair. It’s a really nice place to walk along and enjoy the view. There’s even a point where crazy people dive off into the sea, although I didn’t see anyone do that whilst I was there.

Sometimes I forget that it’s actually monsoon season here, and suddenly I remember as it starts to rain heavily. As I watched the rain from the shelter of a hotel porch, I can’t help but feel more of that tropical holiday feeling. I remember going on holiday as a kid to a tropical destination and doing this exact same thing. Even watching the rain is beautiful. It pelts down relentlessly for at least 10 minutes before letting up again. Once it stopped, I carried on along the rampart hoping to catch a glimpse of the sunset, but the clouds blocked any chance of that. The rain starts again as I tuck into an ice cream before heading back to Colombo. Such a beautiful day in the gorgeous and laid back south coast of Sri Lanka.
